Don't Optimize That Which You Don't Measure by Owein Reese

First, an aside… I’m going to start linking posts on here that I also make on social media business focused websites. This is the first real concerted effort post I made on LinkedIn wherein my goal is to share short stories, wisdom or actionable insights around running a team/organization. Those posts need to be small and direct, without any embellishment. This blog can do more long form.

I’ll add more context here, otherwise why would you want to come read my blog?

What I didn’t say

I get so much push back from highly opinionated folks whose anecdotal experience has lead them to prematurely optimize some facet of their team experience. They don’t need to measure anything because they know this <insert thing> is a problem or will quickly become a problem. They are the biggest hurdle facing their team(s.)

I don’t understand their resistance to doing some form of due diligence before committing resources to an initiative. Ironically, these same people won’t begin that initiative without first writing up a technical spec outlining all that needs to be done. They will spend several hours ensuring the project will run smoothly without spending less time asking the question “should this be the project we begin?”

Don’t be that person.
